Lawmakers can’t carry guns in the state Capitol anymore. Enforcement is on the honor system

Backers see it as a reasonable measure in a building where tempers can often get hot, while opponents argue the ban ignores the threats lawmakers face.

Colorado lawmakers face a new rule this year: They can no longer bring guns into the State Capitol.

The ban is part of a new state law passed last year that generally prohibits carrying guns in so-called “sensitive spaces,” including government buildings, polling places, childcare facilities and schools. The law went into effect for most locations last summer.
